Which category does she belong in?

This causes more confusion than anything else.

Teen is for unmarried girls in their teens. Miss is for women who have never married. Mrs is for women who are or have been married — including those who are divorced, separated or widowed.

The line is marital history, not current status. A woman who has been married enters Mrs, whatever her situation today. A divorce or a bereavement does not move her back to Miss.

Age doesn’t decide the category either. A married woman of 24 enters Mrs. A never-married woman of 40 enters Miss, on platforms with no upper age limit.

One note: at international level this is shifting. Miss Universe removed its marital and parental restrictions in 2023, and married women and mothers can now compete. Indian Miss platforms have generally retained the never-married requirement, so the rule above still applies domestically.

Is there an age limit?

This varies more than any other criterion.

Across Mrs India platforms, upper limits run from 45 to 62. Some use age brackets instead: one splits into 21–40, 40–60 and 60+. A woman of 50 is ineligible at one pageant and competing in a dedicated category at another.

Miss categories generally open at 18, with upper limits varying widely. Teen categories are defined by their age band.

A small number of platforms set no upper age limit at all. TIGP is one — its Mrs India category has no upper cap, and contestants over 55 have competed.

Being told you’re too old somewhere is that pageant’s rule, not the industry’s.

Is there a height requirement?

At some pageants, yes. At least two Indian platforms require a minimum of five feet, measured without heels. One also sets a weight ceiling of 90 kilos.

Others state no height or weight criteria and judge on presence, confidence and stage command. TIGP is among these.

If height has been the reason for not applying, it is worth checking the specific pageant’s published rules. They genuinely differ.

Is there a weight or size criteria?

Most Indian platforms do not publish one. At least one sets a ceiling of 90 kilos.

Where no criteria exist, selection is based on confidence, stage presence and how a contestant carries herself — not measurements. TIGP publishes no weight or size criteria.

A related question comes up often: whether measurements are taken at audition. On platforms with no size criteria, they are not a selection factor. Wardrobe fitting is a separate matter and happens after selection.

Can a divorced, separated or widowed woman enter?

On most Mrs India platforms, yes. Married, divorced, separated and widowed women are all eligible, and several explicitly include single mothers.

Documentation requirements differ. Some platforms ask for proof of marital status; others do not. It is worth asking before applying rather than assuming.

TIGP accepts married, divorced, separated and widowed women.

Can a mother enter?

Yes, across every platform reviewed. Motherhood is not a bar anywhere in the Mrs category, and many contestants are mothers.

The practical question is usually time rather than eligibility — training and finale commitments have to fit around a family. That is worth raising with any organiser before applying, and most will describe the schedule honestly if asked.

Can someone apply from outside India?

Yes. Every major platform accepts women of Indian origin living abroad — NRI, PIO and OCI status are all generally accepted.

What differs is what happens after selection. Some pageants require attendance at auditions and events in India. Others run online auditions and only require travel for the finale.

For anyone applying from the USA, UK, UAE, Canada or elsewhere, the question to ask is: how much of this is remote, and how many days in India will be required?

Is modelling or pageant experience needed?

No platform reviewed requires it, and most state so explicitly. The majority of contestants across Indian pageants have no prior experience.

Training is generally provided after selection rather than expected beforehand. Where a platform runs a structured programme, that is where walk, stage presence, communication and grooming are taught.

Anyone who has held back for lack of experience is holding back for a reason no pageant applies.

What documents will be needed?

Requirements are broadly consistent across platforms:

• Government photo identification — Aadhaar, passport, PAN or voter ID
• Proof of age, usually satisfied by the same document
• Proof of marital status for Mrs categories, on some platforms
• Recent photographs — a headshot and a full-length shot

Professional photographs are rarely required at application stage. Several platforms state explicitly that phone photographs are acceptable.

What if the criteria don’t fit?

Eligibility rules differ enough that not fitting one platform says little about the others.

A woman turned away for age at a pageant capping at 45 may be eligible at one running to 62, or at one with no cap. Someone below a five-foot minimum at one platform will find others with no height criteria at all.

The practical step is to read the published criteria of each platform rather than assuming a single industry standard exists. Where criteria are not published clearly, that is itself worth noting.
